The scene in each chamber is chosen intentionally to match the scientific purpose of that region of the heart:
Right atrium: a reservoir that takes up oxygen poor blood, is filled with Columbia Gorge wildflowers because lots of native plants here thrive in nutrient-poor soil and help improve it for future steps of the ecological journey.
Right ventricle: Forcefully pumps blood to your arteries and lungs, and so houses the ocean which is powerful, forceful, and it feels easier to breathe in ocean air.
Left atrium: a reservoir for oxygen rich blood. This chamber holds an old growth forest, because trees produce oxygen and improve air quality.
Left ventricle: Pumps blood through the body, and is often referred to as the final player or main character in the heart. This chamber contains Mount Hood, because the mountain (volcano) is the most powerful main character in the PNW.

I'll teach you how to paint a beautiful PNW beach sunset scene with watercolors! We will warm up by exploring our color palette as always. I will begin by demonstrating my techniques to landscape painting in watercolor, focusing on how to paint a sunset gradient and colorful reflections on the ocean! You'll then be able to apply your new skills to your own painting, following along as I show you each step of the way.
You'll take home a finished Pacific Northwest landscape painting. You'll also leave with a set of artist's skills that you'll be able to directly apply to future paintings - whether you paint in your bedroom or plein air out in nature. A limited palette of watercolors and high quality watercolor paper will be provided at the event, but you are encouraged to bring your favorite painting supplies as well. Arin is a watercolor and mixed media artist based in Portland. With a background in the physical sciences, she lives at the intersection of nature, science and art and uses art as a platform to teach, explore and understand how the world works while breaking down the barrier between art and science. Hi, I’m Arin!
I’m a Portland-based watercolor artist heavily influenced by the beauty of the Pacific Northwest and the way humanity and nature intertwine. I studied chemistry and engineering in college and grad school - my art exists at the intersection of nature, science and art and I’m always looking for new ways to blend art and science.
I teach watercolor workshops around the Portland and Vancouver, WA area - at bars, art galleries, and outdoors at local farms and parks. My intro painting classes focus on making watercolors feel more approachable by using a style based on my experience as a science educator.
